# Title Piping Plover "Monty" Startled by Eastern Kingbird Description A Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) named "Monty" has momentarily left an egg-filled nest after being startled by an Eastern Kingbird perching on the plover's wire exclosure on a Chicago beach. Monty and his mate Rose first nested at Montrose Dunes in 2019—the first recorded nesting pair at Montrose and the first in Cook County in over 60 years. In the fall, after raising their chicks, the birds fly south to spend winter along the southern U.S. coast (in separate locations). Monty and Rose returned to Montrose in 2020 and again in 2021. The Piping Plover is an endangered species in the Great Lakes region. The species's populations originally declined in the 19th and early 20th century when humans killed the plovers for their feathers to use in women's hats. More recently shoreline development, habitat destruction and other human activities have caused further decline.
